Chapter Fourteen

GIAN

Rhea’s pussy is the only thing on my mind today. It’s preventing me from listening to the men in my office, from hearing about their dealings and offering my advice. Too much of my job lately is listening.

I’m good at it. I was trained to listen to the things not said, to the messages hidden between every line. It makes me better at helping them, better at seeing the possibilities, knowing the consequences of every action.

Rafi swings the door open to my office at Alibi. I choose to meet with men here, it’s bigger than the office at the pizza shop and nicer. We used to sit around the tables at the restaurant to do business, but now with more issues and the chance of someone eavesdropping, we opt for the club instead.

His face is frantic when he looks at me, which maybe explains why he didn’t knock and rushed in instead. I let my irritability at the intrusion slide.

“Boss,” he says, the tone of his voice too high. “They attacked.”

“Who?” I ask. Any attack is serious, but the urgency in his words makes me think the hit must have been on Gio or taken out a whole gang of men.

“Your house,” he says, “They almost got to Rhea.”

My heart stops, a numbness creeping over me. “Who?” I ask again, acknowledging that Rafi didn’t actually answer my question. “Who the fuck was it?” I demand, rising from the chair and whipping down the newspaper I’d been holding, smacking the rolled bundle against my desk.

For the first time I see Rafi shake, fear radiates off him from my yelling. “I don’t know,” his eyes lower as he says the words.

He doesn’t know? How does he not know? Why would he barge in here with a problem and no answers?

“Find out,” I growl. “We’re done here,” I say to the men sitting in my office. “I want to know who just attacked me,” I tell them, grabbing my suit jacket from the back of the chair and sliding it up my arms.

“Where are you going?” Gio asks.

“To see my wife.”

Rhea is huddled in the bedroom when I get there. Her knees are tucked to her chest and all the lights are off with the curtains drawn. She sits on the floor beside the bed, far from all the windows that look out into our backyard.

I stand in the doorway, taking her in for a moment. “Are you okay?”

Her head snaps up, her emerald eyes meeting mine. She hops to her feet, coming toward me at a quick pace. I think she’s going to hit me, slap me or scream at me for getting her into this situation, but instead she wraps her arms around me, pressing her face into my shirt.

I let my arms circle around her, running a hand over her back in a soothing motion. “I’m sorry, cara mia,” I whisper. “I’m sorry this happened.”

She pulls back just enough to show me her glossy eyes. “What did happen?” she asks.
